Laravel vs. Lumen

These are two of the most sought-after frameworks available for the creation of web applications in the contemporary world. Let’s weigh them down and find out who gets the throne.

  • In terms of definition, Laravel functions in a full-stack web application framework based on MVC. It assists third-party tools. However, Lumen is derived from Laravel designed to develop microservices and the advancement of Application Programming Interfaces (API). It makes use of a micro framework with the goals to provide faster performance and a high response time
  • To use the server and the other tools accompanied by the application, it is necessary for Laravel to have various configurations. The features include clean architecture, open-source, growing community, etc in PHP. Contradictorily, Lumen is the less complicated version of Laravel which renders exclusive features such as API development, cookies, templating, caching, routing, etc. Since it is built on a micro framework, it is user-friendly and utilizes the convenient components – eloquent, database, cashing, etc.
  • Laravel has the potential to integrate with a fairly large number of tools but Lumen can hardly integrate with any tool.
  • Laravel performs well when it comes to SQL queries and regulating the database from the application level as opposed to Lumen whose performance will witness a downfall when it is associated with SQL queries and they hold less number of features when compared to the OG web application.
  • Laravel has Blade as the default template engine, written in PHP. It has a variety of specifications under the ORM framework whereas Lumen has 0 specifications because of its relevance to Laravel.
  • Laravel has a built-in command-line interface on its own, associated with a framework though Lumen has a plethora of features in its micro-framework.
  • Laravel consists of an object-relational mapping framework which is installed internally. Lumen has to be upgraded that can be done easily.
  • Laravel is brilliant for creating restful Application Programming Interfaces while Lumen is applauded for its high-performance micro framework which utilizes Application Programming Interfaces for developing microservices.
  • Good documentation exists for Laravel to function on and kickstart the project. Even though Lumen is user-friendly, its documentation is vague.
  • Laravel can deal with the accumulation of events in a smooth manner but Lumen does not support that sort of a feature.
  • The former has an intense template system while the latter is deprived of a template system.
  • Laravel makes room for a steep learning curve to ace the framework and become a professional. However, the learning curve that belongs to Lumen has a less generous steep but the execution is gentle.
  • The performance factor of Laravel is not up to the mark contradicting the performance of Lumen which is outstanding.
  • Laravel is capable of creating Symfony components with the help of a Symfony framework – a PHP web application framework whose PHP components/library can be reused. This is not the case for Lumen because they are not blessed with these features.

You cannot declare the winner out of the two options because they serve the clients with different purposes.
