A research agent can assemble: customer questions, competing angles, SERP patterns, on-site search queries, support tickets, sales call notes, and product documentation. It then creates a brief: target persona, intent, thesis, proof, structure, CTA, and distribution plan.

AI assists in three places.

And it allows you to generate schema and structured FAQs (very carefully) so that search engines and answer engines can parse your content.

Where this shines: fast prototyping, social-first creatives, localization, and product imagery permutations.
Where it sucks: when you consider AI images as “final” and skip QA (hands, anatomy, logos, compliance text).
If you operate an e-commerce business, your product feed is your biggest creative asset.
AI feed intelligence enhances: titles, descriptions, attributes, category mapping, variant grouping and images selection. It can also identify problems such as missing GTINs, inconsistent sizing, or deceiving images. These enhancements multiply as they play into several channels: search ads, shopping ads, marketplaces, and onsite search.
On Meta, catalog advertising is increasingly turning to automated creative enhancements like overlays and background generation for catalog ads.
When it shines: high-SKU catalogs, retail, marketplaces, and shopping ads.
When it fails: when feed enrichment leads to inaccuracies (wrong materials, wrong sizing), resulting in returns and loss of trust.
Ad optimization is lost if the landing page is poor.
AI assists with landing pages in two ways.
Firstly, it speeds up iteration: creating section variants, rewriting above the fold for intent match, generating new layouts, and developing segment-specific pages. Secondly, it enables greater personalization: showing the correct proof, what offer, and what product order to show based on ad click context.

AI is great at generating initial drafts for localization for different languages and markets. But the key to implementation is to maintain brand voice and compliance limitations by market.
The right process should be: localized versions are drafted by AI; they are then approved by the local reviewer; all claims are referenced to approved ‘product truth’ sources; and the variants are tested locally.
Where this plays out well: global paid social, multi-region SEO, and lifecycle messaging.
When It Goes Wrong: If AI shifts into literal translation mode, cultural nuance or legal constraints may be broken.
This is the greatest—and most perilous—change in the modern era of performance marketing.
Platforms are encouraging “all-in-one” AI campaign types:
Performance Max on Google Ads is a type of goal-based campaign in which the advertiser can reach across all avenues on Google from one campaign, such as Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, and Maps.
For Meta, the Advantage+ sales campaign, along with several related Advantage+ experiences are now leading advertisers to automated campaign setup.
Smart Performance Campaign on TikTok is an end-to-end automation campaign solution that generates multiple creatives and bids with less manual input.
Accelerate campaigns on LinkedIn are being promoted as AI-based campaign creation and optimization, with stated improvements in efficiency and enhancements in cost per action (CPA) in LinkedIn’s own documentation.
On Amazon Ads: Amazon DSP Performance+ is presented as an AI-based DSP solution for conversion objectives on and off Amazon.
Why these work: they leverage platform-native signals more efficiently than a person could. They also alleviate the operational burden of testing audiences and placements.
Why they fail: control, measurement, and creative risk. You may lose sight of what actually drove performance, and you may unwittingly approve automated creatives that damage your brand.
Two pragmatic policies hold teams accountable and safe:
First, think of automated campaign types as “a trading desk.” You set a budget, you define guardrails, and you measure incrementality — instead of managing settings at a granular level.
Second, execute them with controlled baselines. When you don’t run holdouts or lift tests, you risk confusing cannibalization with growth.
Also, expect close examination. PMAX is so critical that it has been subject to competition investigations (again, Turkey’s probe is a signal of wider scrutiny).
As third-party identifiers crumble, first-party data becomes the staple of targeting and measurement.
This will push the marketing team leaning into the need for superior identity resolution and better event capture: hashed emails, phone numbers, crm ids, and server-side events.
Google’s Enhanced Conversions is specifically built to enhance conversion tracking with the use of hashed first-party conversion data sending using SHA256.
Meta’s Conversions API allows you to send web events from your servers directly to Meta.
These are more than just tracking features. They’re also the fuel for audience modeling and optimization.
Where this shines: e-commerce, subscription products, lead-gen with offline conversion data, and repeat-purchase businesses.
Where it breaks down is when the quality of the data is poor (duplicate users, missing consent, inconsistent event naming, among other things), and you get garbage optimisation.
Contemporary marketing must function in a privacy-restricted space, and the technical layer of measurement has evolved into a layer of marketing strategy.
Google’s Consent Mode modifies the behavior of tags according to the user’s consent, and sends consent status and events using “pings”, allowing for modeling of conversions and behaviors in Google Ads and GA4.
At the same time, browser policy changes continue to alter the measurement landscape and have attracted regulatory scrutiny. Reuters said Google would not introduce a new separate prompt for third-party cookies but would keep the current settings while advancing Privacy Sandbox APIs.
Where it wins: any company that spends a meaningful amount on paid media in the EU/EEA or other privacy-sensitive markets.
Where it misses: this is when teams view consent as simply a legal matter and lose sight of the fact that it is also a data quality metric.
The majority of teams optimize creatives based on CTR and CPA, which is a necessity, but not a sufficiency.
AI enables you to go towards creative diagnostics: which elements led to performance. Were the first 2 seconds of the video it? Was it the offer line? Was it the evidence style? Was it the motif visuel?
That means two things: creative tagging (structured metadata) and model-based analytics (multivariate regression or causal techniques) that can isolate creative impact from targeting and seasonality.
If you do this right, you have a “creative knowledge base”: a living playbook of what your audience engages with, updated weekly. It compounds, and that becomes a notable advantage because it applies to all channels.
Where this shines: brands with high creative turnover (D2C, apps, marketplaces).
Where it breaks: if tagging is inconsistent, then the insights become unreliable.
Most marketing decisions boil down to allocation issues: Which channel receives the budget, which ad set receives the spend, which segment gets impressions.
Platforms do algorithmic bidding already. Your internal AI brings value by cross-platform optimization: howmuch to spread across Meta vs Google vs TikTok vs retail media vs email options, given diminishing returns.
It’s manual at a small scale. At the “serious” scale, you need an allocation engine that can handle marginal returns, constraints (brand budgets, minimum spends, learning phases), and risk tolerance. This is the place where marketing mix modeling and incrementality testing tie straight into optimization.

Google Ads Conversion Lift is an incrementality measurement tool that measures the conversions generated as a result of advertising exposure.
In real life, serious marketers rely on lift tests for evaluating new channels, verifying retargeting, calibrating MMM, and avoiding overinvestment in cannibalizing tactics.
Where this shines: retargeting, brand + performance overlap, upper-funnel spend, and platform automation validation.
When it goes wrong: if the studies are too weak or badly designed, producing false results.
MMM was once the subject of an annual consulting exercise. AI and open-source tools are making that possible.
Meridian, powered by Google, is an open-source MMM developed to handle today’s measurement issues and is said to be privacy durable.
Meta’s Robyn is an open-source MMM package from Meta Marketing Science, which leverages ML and optimization techniques to estimate channel effects and especially facilitate budget allocation.
MMM is important these days as it is one of the few methodologies that can take offline channels, macro factors, seasonality, and privacy constraints into account in one model. It’s not perfect. It is influenced by the quality of data and assumptions. But it delivers a strategic perspective that last-click can’t.
Where this shines: multi-channel brands, retail with in-store sales, and “brand + performance” combinations.
Where it falls down: when teams consider the MMM results as the absolute truth rather than providing directional decision support.
Data collaboration is emerging as a new “targeting primitive.”
As identifiers become weaker, platforms provide privacy-safe environments to match and analyze audiences without exchanging raw personal data. Marketers use them primarily for measurement and reach planning, and occasionally for activation.
It is a complicated space with vendor-specific tooling, but the underlying principle is rock-solid: go from “export user lists everywhere” to “calculate insights where the data lives.”
Where it wins: big advertisers, retail partnerships, co-marketing, and closed-loop measurement.
Where it falls short: when teams underestimate engineering complexity and overestimate short-term ROI.
Retail media is growing exponentially, and measurement has been chaotic as each network reports differently to the brand.
Which is why industry bodies have begun issuing structured measurement guidelines. The IAB/MRC Retail Media Measurement Guidelines include industry best practices and measurement specifications for retail media networks, incorporating data quality checks and tracking.
If you purchase retail media in a measurement-free environment, you could easily overpay for marginally impactful sales.

Where it falls down: when reporting is taken at face value without being incrementalised and deduplicated across channels.
Lifecycle marketing, and that’s where AI can quietly generate the most sustainable income.
The reasoning is straightforward: acquisition is costly and precarious; retention and expansion are multiplicative.
Lifecycle AI encompasses: churn prediction, next-best-action, send-time optimization, offer selection, and channel orchestration across email, SMS, push, and in-application.
Platforms are now expressly productizing “AI agents” for lifecycle marketing. Klaviyo frames K:AI as native agents that leverage real-time customer profiles to orchestrate and execute marketing and personalize deliveries with humans in the loop.
Where this shines: subscription, repeat purchase ecommerce, apps, and marketplaces.
Where it fails: when personalization gets spammy, or teams are incentivized to optimize for short-term conversion at the expense of long-term trust.
Marketing isn’t over once you get the click. So a big chunk of conversion takes place in “support-like” interactions: FAQs, objections, shipping queries, refund queries, product matching.
AI agents can conduct these interactions en masse, and the evidence from the field is that this leads to meaningful productivity improvements for support work. The NBER analysis of generative AI for customer support observed average productivity gains and larger gains for less experienced workers.
For marketing teams, the point isn’t simply to reduce the cost of support. It’s conversion lift and retention. Good support means fewer abandoned carts, fewer returns, and more repeat purchases.
This is where it wins: high-consideration products, complex pricing, international customers, and small teams.
Where it falls down: when agents make up policies, shipping times, or refund rules.
AI can enhance pricing and promotions by estimating elasticity, adapting discounting strategy, and tailoring offers.
But I think this is one of the most sensitive areas in marketing because it touches on fairness, consumer trust, and regulation.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has now turned to a 6(b) study on ‘surveillance pricing’, issuing orders to intermediary firms concerning the use of personal data to determine individualized prices or promotions.
That is a powerful message: pricing personalization is not merely a growth lever. It is a domain of reputational and regulatory risk. If you are building AI pricing, you must have explicit policy constraints and be auditable: what signals may be used, which cannot, and how to avoid discriminatory results.
Where it shines: planning promotions, inventory-led discounting, and bundling optimization.
When it breaks down: Personalization is exploitative or opaque, undermining trust.
If you want to use AI to help with marketing, your most important dataset is your first-party “truth table”: events, identities, and outcomes. That should be uniform event taxonomy, stable user_ids, and a clean join between ads → sessions → conversions → revenue → retention.
Then you layer on platform-specific measurement enhancements such as Meta’s Conversions API and Google Enhanced Conversions, and consent-aware measurement through Consent Mode.
Accountability for steering in operation. Life tests for real. MMM for strategy and budget distribution. Meridian and Robyn exist because the industry once again needs privacy-durable strategy models.
The marketing AI failure mode that is most pervasive isn’t poor quality. It’s an unverifiable quality at scale.
You want brand truth sources, approvals, and logs. For creative generation, the “commercial safety” approach and licensing clarity (as outlined in Adobe’s Firefly materials) are among the reasons why enterprises prefer governed tools.
Winners in AI marketing run on weekly loops: creative tests, CRO tests, lift tests, lifecycle experiments. AI makes running these loops cheaper. The loop in and of itself is the advantage.
If you want a working order of practical steps that applies to most businesses:
First, start with the foundation of measurement: server-side events + consent-aware tagging + enhanced conversions, because everything else is easier when optimization has to clean that data.
Then execute creative and content velocity systems with brand guardrails, because you can get instant output lift with controlled risk.
Then implement automated campaign formats with strong incrementality validation, as automation can push performance, but only if you can demonstrate it is incremental.
Then, go build lifecycle agents, since growth compounding retention is the most sustainable growth.
And finally, add in MMM when you have stable spending and clean result data, because MMM can help you spend bigger budgets with less guesswork.
